Chapter 9
"So the word around school is that Jessica caught Jeremy and Sue togetherâin the woods last night," Lila confided to Robby in a low voice. Lila and Robby were sharing an ice-cream sundae and a float at Casey's Ice Cream Parlor on Monday after school.
"Wow," Robby said, whistling softly under his breath. He took a long draw on the root-beer float and shook his head regretfully. "That guy just can't make up his mind, can he?"
Lila brought a spoonful of million-dollar-mocha ice cream and whipped cream delicately to her mouth. "Robby, did you have any idea Jeremy was so fickle? What's his deal?"
"I have no idea," Robby said, shaking his head. "All Jeremy's told me is pretty much the same as what Jessica has told youâthat he broke off the wedding with Sue because he fell in love with Jessica."
"But is this his pattern?" Lila persisted. "Does he always fool around with other women when he's dating someone?"
"Honestly, Lila, I have no idea," said Robby, spreading his hands out wide. "I've only been friends with Jeremy since I met him at the beach during that volleyball game a few months ago."
Suddenly something clicked in Lila's head. "You became friends with Jeremy when he first arrived in Sweet Valley?"
"Uh-huh." Robby nodded, spooning a scoop of vanilla ice cream into his mouth.
"And how long did you know him before we met you on the beach?" Lila asked.
"Oh, I don't know, about a week, I guess," said Robby.
Lila calculated quickly, her mind whirring with ideas. "So that means that Jeremy had been in Sweet Valley for at least two weeks before he showed up at the Wakefields'."
"Lila, what are you getting at?" Robby asked, a perplexed expression on his face.
"Well, what was he doing here during that time?" Lila said. She brought her head close to Robby's. "Maybe he had some other woman in his life then," she concluded.
"I don't know, Lila. I think you're letting your imagination run away with you. Jeremy's not some kind of shark preying the waters of Sweet Valley, California." He stopped to think for a moment. "Actually, when I first met Jeremy, he said he had some business to tend to here."
"Aha!" said Lila, raising her index finger in the air. "What kind of business?"
"I don't know, Lila," said Robby. "But I doubt it was girls."
"Well, Jessica's better off without him," Lila said, shrugging her shoulders dismissively. "He's too old for her anyway."
Robby put on a mock hurt expression. "You mean you don't like older guys?" he asked, taking her hand tenderly.
"Only a couple years older," she said, smiling up at her handsome boyfriend. Robby was eighteen but had decided to put off college for a year in order to devote himself to his art. Lila ruffled Robby's mass of thick black hair and brought his face toward her. They leaned in together for a tender kiss. Lila could taste the sweet flavor of ice cream on Robby's lips. "Umm," she said as they drew back.
"Better than ice cream," Robby agreed, laughing.
